Inspiration From Music
One of the ways that Dolce & Gabbana has aligned Alta Moda with an inspirational outlet is through its incorporation of iconic music in its presentation. Its first show in July 2012 opened in the ancient iconic Roman amphitheater with a performance of Bellini’s Bel Canto opera Norma. In 2016, Alta Moda’s show in Milan included clothing inspired by the heroines of Giacomo Puccini’s operatic heroines. The 2017 Alta Moda collection was dedicated to the masterpieces of the composer Giuseppe Verdi.
Inspiration From Art
In 2013, the Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda collection was inspired by symbols of Milan, and the event was influenced by mosaics in Venetian and Byzantine cathedrals. The 2017 show in Tokyo paid tribute to Asian engravings, Renaissance paintings, and Baroque fashion, and the show in Beijing was dedicated to Chinese art. Inspiration From Literature and Film
The first Alta Moda autumn/winter collection, released in 2012, was inspired by Luchino Visconti’s 1963 film The Leopard. In 2015, the brand’s Portofino collection became Dolce & Gabbana’s largest production with 80 performers and 94 models participating in the show inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In 2018, the brand’s first New York show premiered at the New York Public Library, further proclaiming the influence of literature on the brand and its iconic pieces. In 2018, the Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda show premiered the Alta Gioielleria collection, which was created in tribute to The Betrothed, the first Italian historical novel. The 2019 collection of Alta Gioielleria was held in Palma di Montechiaro in tribute to the Italian prince and author Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, and its winter event was held in the historical library Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan.
